Technology Tip #22: Online Weight Loss Tools

Times magazine wrote that one of the top New Year's Resolution to be broken is to "Lose Weight and Get Fit". As we herald in the New Year I thought it would be fun to share some free online tools that can help you try to maintain that resolution.

A lot of fitness websites will have a ton of features including ways to track your calorie intake, free exercise routines, blogging space, and a social networking capability. Let's face it...some websites do some things better. Based on my own experience and some online reviews here are some of the most popular websites for your fitness goals this 2012.

My Fitness Pal / www.myfitnesspal.com

I found this website easy to use and I even got a few friends to join with me. This is a community based website that allows you to track your food, exercising, and create a online profile to interact with friends. You can post updates directly to your Facebook from their website and there is a app that you can download for your smart phone. It will help you set fitness, calorie, and weight goals. Keep your friends up to date while blogging about your trials and tribulations. The best part is that everything is free.

Livestrong / www.livestrong.com

I used to use this website and I would recommend it for people that are serious about their fitness goals. It offers more tools than Fitness Pal and a far more comprehensive food tracking system called the Daily Plate. I suggest this for people that really want to track their nutrition intake and accurately track every calorie burned. Another tool I really loved was their tool called "LOOP" for directly tracking the route you took on a walk, run, bike, etc. This way you don't have to drive the car around your path for mileage. Most of the features on Livestrong are free but for some of the more advanced options you will have to pay a membership fee.

My Food Diary / www.myfooddiary.com

This website is easy to use and popular. Unlike My Fitness Pal it is not completely free and some of the options require a membership. You can still access a food diary, exercise log, and a weight loss forum so you can look for inspiration and support from other users.

Women's Fitness / www.fitnessmagazine.com

If you are just looking for quick workouts Women's Fitness magazine offers one page printable workouts. This is free but you will have to give them your e-mail address. These workouts are awesome and lately they have been providing quick 15 minute workouts that torch calories.

Uncommone Genre 2: Historical Cookbooks

Marie Antoinette said "Let them eat cake!". I want to know what cake tasted like to Marie Antoinette in the 1700s. Since I definitely don't want to find cake that was made in the 1700s (ewwww), my best bet is to find a recipe from the 1700s and make it myself. So today I want to do a little research on a uncommon genre of books, historical cookbooks.

I can just do a web search for "1700s cake recipe" and get thousands of finds. If you use one of these recipes there is no guarantee it is authentic. Just because the person who posted it on the internet swears it has been in the family since the Colonial does not make it authentic. So today's post is going to focus on authentic resources that we can validate as being time period correct.

Part of the process of finding authentic books is actually being able to see the original book yourself. I do this by searching the internet for visual images of these older books. If you want to try browsing for them go to Google Books, look for cookbooks, and in the right hand side change the publish date to the desired years. Here are a few authentic resource examples.

American

American Cookery by Amelia Simmons (1798)

This is the first known American cookbook that used American ingredients. The book is available for purchase by several vendors but since it is not protected by copyright you can peruse digital images of the book at Michigan State University by clicking on the title.

If you would like to view 75 other cookbooks from 1798 through the late 1900s check out all of Michigan State University's project called Feeding America. There are images available all similar to American Cookery.

European

Early European cookbooks are harder to find because they are usually in the original language and not translated. If you are serious about finding them I thought I would at least give you a starting point. This book does not have any recipes but it lists all of the original print dates and titles of European cookbooks from that era. I recommend this only for serious culinary patrons because it is not available through Wisconsin lenders and it can be pricey.

Technology Tip #20:YouTube Holiday Hellos!

Ah, the infamous Holiday Newsletter. Depending on the author it can be a instrument of entertainment or terror. You can still send traditional ink, but engage your family with a Holiday Video and post it on YouTube.

Holiday Video:

Step 1: Use a recording device like your digital camera, a web cam with microphone on your computer, etc and work with your family to make a short two minute video saying hello to everyone for the holidays. You can have fun with this by wearing your favorite holiday sweater and showing off your Christmas decorations.

Step 2: Go to www.youtube.com and upload your video. YouTube will generate a link that you can share with people. (Click here to be brought to the YouTube help page.)

Step 3: Send an e-mail to friends and family with the link to your Holiday Video.

Making the video is part of the fun and is a bonding opportunity with family members or unfortunate pets. It may not be a masterpiece but you will stand out from the ink newsletters. To give you a little courage check out Bob's family holiday video.

UnCommon Genre Week 1: Historical Military Westerns

Western sub-genres generally include the following categories which reflect the interests of western. One such sub genre is Historical Military Westerns. In this genre you read to Western novel fictions that have accurate details of the historical events. This helps you as a reader be entertained with a quick pace adventure and learn something with the detailed description of the action and events.

Reader Advisory - Thoughts on Reading

Betty Rosenberg is an idol of mine. She was not a First Lady or an inventor. She was a wickedly clever librarian employed by UCLA who had a shock of white hair and chain smoked cigarettes. Her written words always have a ring of reverent wisdom and truth and my favorite Rosenberg quote is: "Never apologize for your reading tastes".

I agree wholeheartedly with that quote and believed in its meaning before I heard about it from Betty. I grew up in a family that loved to read, but every single one of us had an entirely different taste. My Mother is a fervent reader and can always be found reading romance novels, anything about UFOs, and Soap Opera Digest. As if to prove how much my Father loves reading he built in magazine/book racks into the toilet paper dispensers at our house so he could keep his Science Fiction novels near. My Grandfather was more of a literary reader and taught me appreciation of Shakespeare, Steinbeck, and the beauty of poetry. The point being....each one of these people loved to read something different. When it comes to reading for enjoyment I believe that UFOs are just as important as Steinbeck. Read what you love and sometimes try reading what other people love.

With that in mind I would like to provide some reader advisory tools for some genres that don't get as much appreciation as they should. Every month I will try to provide some reader advisory tools for a specific genre. So look for that blog post titles with "Reader Advisory". Our first blog will come next week. If you are thinking about a particular item, anything from an e-book reader, digital camera, snow tires, or washing machine, Consumer Reports has probably reviewed it and can make some suggestions.

Oooh... the big day is almost here. This week the shelves are being finished and the new furniture is being delivered and installed. While it won't all be done until we actually move back, nearly everything that isn't at our temporary home is now at our gorgeous, new home. Here are some photos from earlier today:

Here is a portion of the children's area, with new shelving on the left (without the wood end caps which will be installed by Friday, Dec. 2), the four children's computer stations (center), and the board book bin (right) all in place.

Our new meeting room, now with tables and chairs! They are surprisingly comfortable chairs for multi-purpose, meeting room, stackable chairs.

These "not quite ready for prime time" booths that will be part of the Young Adult area. When complete and properly installed, these will make a nice seating area for our teen and college-aged patrons.

Take a glimpse at our new Children's Area. Miss Jane will be right at home in the bright and fun interior. Check out those fish!

Here is a similiar view, but a little brighter. If you see the shelving unit near the back you get a sample of what some of the furniture will look like.

Now begins the process of putting together all of the shelving units. Something neat about the new library is our entire collection will be availble on the library floor. (No more circulation reserve).

They are alive! Watch as our shelving units get put together and rise towards the ceiling. Look at all the boxes they came in.

Imagine this space filling with library materials. Hardcover, softcover, DVDs, periodicals, CDs, oh my!

The front entrance is looking bright and cheerful in preperation for our return. The skylights provide extra illumination in the heart of the library.

Here is a view from behind one of the desks at the library. This gives you what the library looks like from a staff's perspective.

Look at all of the sunglight that streams in from the windows. The park and ballfield will be viewable from those big windows.

The circulation desk is ready to go. The lamps wll be unveiled soon and ready to glow for our open house during Midnight Magic.

The shades for the large windows will come in handy during the summer months. Look at how well they can block out the extra sunlight.

If you aren't on Facebook I bet you have heard about it in the news. This website has more than 800 million active users. When you post something interesting it can spread like wild fire around the world. There are countless stories of people losing their jobs, marriages, and more about the carelessness of their posting and who sees it. There is also concerns from parent's about children posting information on the internet and who has access to it.

The truth is, Facebook is as private as you would like it to be. You can choose who can view your information, what information you see, and even if someone can find your name when they search the website. One of the best resources I have found that guides you through Facebook is the CIO Facebook Bible. If you want to start out with ten simple steps try their 10 Essential Tips & Tricks for all Facebook Users.

I just learned to clean up all those game requests I keep getting and have no interest in!

National Native American Heritage Month, 2011

As Thanksgiving draws near we can put some thought on the holiday and how much Native Americans had to do with our history. President Obama's recent proclamation puts honor towards that history with the National Native American Heritage Month for the month of November. If you read through the proclamation it also illustrates how this is important for the future.

A PROCLAMATION

From the Aleutian Islands to the Florida Everglades, American Indians and Alaska Natives have contributed immensely to our country's heritage. During National Native American Heritage Month, we commemorate their enduring achievements and reaffirm the vital role American Indians and Alaska Natives play in enriching the character of our Nation.

Native Americans stand among America's most distinguished authors, artists, scientists, and political leaders, and in their accomplishments, they have profoundly strengthened the legacy we will leave our children. So, too, have American Indians and Alaska Natives bravely fought to protect this legacy as members of our Armed Forces. As service members, they have shown exceptional valor and heroism on battlefields from the American Revolution to Iraq and Afghanistan. Native Americans have demonstrated time and again their commitment to advancing our common goals, and we honor their resolve in the face of years of marginalization and broken promises. My Administration recognizes the painful chapters in our shared history, and we are fully committed to moving forward with American Indians and Alaska Natives to build a better future together.

To strengthen our economy and win the future for our children, my Administration is addressing problems that have burdened Native American communities for too long. We are working to bolster economic development, expand access to affordable health care, broaden post-secondary educational opportunities, and ensure public safety and tribal justice. In June, I signed an Executive Order establishing the White House Rural Council, to strengthen Federal engagement with tribal governments and promote economic prosperity in Indian Country and across rural America. This comes in conjunction with several settlements that will put more land into the hands of tribes and deliver long-awaited trust reform to Indian Country.

To bring jobs and sustainable growth to tribal nations, my Administration is connecting tribal economies to the broader economy through transportation infrastructure and high-speed Internet, as well as by focusing on clean energy development on tribal lands. First Lady Michelle Obama's recently launched Let's Move! in Indian Country initiative will also redouble efforts to encourage healthy living for American Indians and Alaska Natives. These actions reflect my Administration's ongoing commitment to progress for Native Americans, which was reaffirmed last year when we announced our support for the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Through a comprehensive strategy where the Federal Government and tribal nations move forward as equal partners, we can bring real and lasting change to Indian Country.

This month, we celebrate the rich heritage and myriad contributions of American Indians and Alaska Natives, and we rededicate ourselves to supporting tribal sovereignty, tribal self-determination, and prosperity for all Native Americans. We will seek to strengthen our nation-to-nation relationship by ensuring tribal nations have a voice in shaping national policies impacting tribal communities. We will continue this dialogue at the White House Tribal Nations Conference held in Washington, D.C. next month. Technology Post 16: Poll Your Friends and Coworkers!

Technology can allow you to connect with people in new ways. Polling may be an unexplored avenue you should consider using. All you do is ask a question and wait for people to respond through a web browser, cell phone, or other devices. It is quick, fun, and different.

My favorite tool for this is a website called Poll Everywhere. I like it because you can create a poll within 30 seconds and people can respond on the web, by texting, or through Twitter. Hear are some ways to use it:

-Texting everyone in your circle to see where they would like to eat for dinner. This way everybody gets a vote, and you don't get to hear the complainers.
- When you need an anonymous vote to make a workplace decision.
-Trying to stimulate your friends to get them politically intereseted.

The results get displayed in real time as people respond and can be seen on your web browser, cell phone, or utilized in a PowerPoint display. This is a really basic example:

The holidays are my favorite time for sumptous treats and divine eats! The library has all sorts of great resources to help you plan your largest holiday meal or think up something new to bring to your office potluck.

Come check out our lage magazine collection with magazines like the Food Network, Every Day with Rachel Ray, Good Housekeeping, and Cooks Illustrated. We have hundreds of cookbooks and many specialized versions for your diet or preferences.

I am more likely to bring home something about sweets like Good Housekeeping's The Great Christmas Cookie Swap Cookbook. That doesn't mean you can't make a healthier decision :).

This is the new building profile that will be greeting you when you drive in. With the larger parking lot it should be easier to find a convenient spot place.

The landscaping around the building is underway. Here is one of the paths along the library. Look at how large and deep those paving stones are!

The inside of the library is starting to look a lot more like home. We have ceiling tiles installed, painted walls, trim, doors, and more galore!

The installation of carpet warms up the entire building. Soon this carpet will be getting tested by patrons (and the winter snow).

The old library had a comfortable and familiar feel with all of the mission style wood furniture. The library aims to keep that feeling and you can see that mission style in our new lamps!

Increase your productivity at work and stop using your pointer finger to peck at your keyboard. Invest 15 minutes a day for practicing typing and increase your speed and accuracy. Many standard office and administrative jobs have a mandatory typing speed between 30 to 50 WPM. What is yours?

I used to teach typing courses for Department of Workforce Development clients. My favorite tool to use outside of the classroom was to suggest the website TypingWeb. It is a great website because you create your own account and it will track your progress. It will also help you catch where you make mistakes. If you make it to a certain level or finish a program it will also make printable certificates. The best part? It is free.

So at least check it out, and see how fast you can type!

New Library Open House During Midnight Magic!

While the entire town is opening their doors for Midnight Magic we will be opening our new doors! Come and celebrate our official open house at the new Mukwonago Community Library building! Photos with Santa will be taking place in our new community room on Saturday, December 3rd.

We will begin the move back to the new building on Friday, December 9th and if all goes according to plan reopening our doors on Wednesday, December 14th.

We are excited to be moving back home! Last time we had a smooth move with most of that thanks going to our volunteers. If you are available to volunteer for help during our open house or to help us move please contact Laura at 262-363-6411. Do you think you can write a novel in one month? Are you interested in just trying it out. Join us in the international celebration of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month).

This is simply about inspiring literary abandon. We will be having a get together here at the library on Sunday, November 19th from 10 am to 1 pm. So starting writing tomorrow, collect what you have on the 19th and come visit with like minded writers. Get opinions, guidance, and just have fun!

I (Tristan) will be participating with writing a novel this month. I have never written an entire novel. I can promise you one thing and one thing only...it will not be very polished...or very good. But I am going to try! So try with me!

Now I must admit you may wonder....why would I ever need to make an e-book? Here are a few ideas I came up with.

-You have always wanted to write a book and disregarded the idea because self publishing can be expensive. Creating a e-book can be free to create and disperse.

-Preserving family recipes and making a easy to e-mail e-book!

-You may be a student and get tired of lugging all of your books around. Transport your notes to a e-book and then you can just e-mail your information.

Blacktop! It doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but it really makes the outside look nearly complete, especially in conjunction with the new sidewalks and doors. The exterior is basically down to landscaping at this point, some of which will happen yet this year, but much of which won't really "be seen" until next spring.

On the inside, nearly everything has been primed and much of it has been painted. Lighting fixtures are starting to go up, the ceilings are nearly all installed, and much of the trim work has been added. Things are really moving along! Flooring starts to go in next week.

The latest pics:

The local history and conference room with its fresh paint job and lovely oak trim in place. Also, the suspended ceiling is nearly finished as well!

The "main hall", complete with paint (a little hard to tell because of the lighting) and wood trim. This is going to be a spectacular entry to the library when it is all said and done.

One Thousand Signatures on the New Library Foundation

Thank you to everyone that came to show support for the new library building during our Foundation Signing Event last weekend. We estimate about a thousand people came out and added their signature to the floor.

We heard oooo's and ahhh's over the huge Children's area, the bright new meeting room huge, and the view from the huge windows. If you didn't get to make it take a look at a few of our event pictures. If you did come see if you can spot your signature!

Technology Tip #13: Find How To Do Things Online

The internet is a vast expanse of knowledge that is immediately at your disposal! There is only one problem with that....it isn't organized very well. You can find almost anything you want online *if* you know how to look for it.

In today's blog I am going to show you how to use keywords and boolean to use a search engine like Google help you find how to do tasks in Microsoft Office programs. I have driven myself to the brink of insanity on a few occasions trying to figure how to do a specific task. The chances are if you have had a problem, somebody else has already had the same one. Let's go through how to find instructions on how to do certain tasks in Microsoft Office programs.

Example 1: My teacher requires the pages of my book reports to have pages. How do I do that?

Step 1: Break the problem down into specific key words:

A: You need the program name and year of the program: Microsoft Word 2007

B: Identify the specific task you are trying to do: create page numbers

C: Any additional describing information you may want: on the bottom of the page.

Step 2: Rewrite your question to be a little more concise using your key words:

"How do I create page numbers on the bottom of the page in Microsoft Word 2007?"

Step 3: Write that question into a search engine like Google.com and analyze your results.

Based on your question and choice of key words you will likely get a lot of different responses. The best choices to use are the websites created by the program you are using (like Microsoft's website) or a discussion support board (like howtogeek.com). For this example I found the answer on Microsoft's website, Office.com. To check out the answer click here.

Example 2: (A little more complex) How do I change my settings in Microsoft Office so I don't have automatic formatting for my document?

Technology Tip #12: Enjoyable Web Browsing

One of the easiest ways to learn about computers and other web browsing tools is by using them for entertainment. When you use your computer to watch movies, surf the web, and other fun things...learning how to use them will come naturally (and not feel like work).

Here are a few websites to start you on your entertainment discovery:

StumbleUpon- This website's application helps you to discover web pages, photos and videos that have been recommended by other people. You can also rate the web pages yourself, so the more you use the application the more it gets to know your tastes. I have found some really neat websites through this application, like http://www.jacksonpollock.org/ . What can you find?

Hulu - Hulu is nice because it has a large variety of movies and shows that you can watch for free. That type of (legal) movie selection is a rariety on the Internet. For instance you can watch the popular series The Office or a movie like Beverly Hills Ninja.

Craigslist - Craigslist is a very simple message board with a different website for major metropolitan areas. Essentially it is like a large classifieds website. Use it to find rentals, local people trying to sell items, and job postings. Please be advised that any website that involves people posting can involve scams and fake postings, always use common sense and caution.

Construction Photos: Fourteen

Last time you saw what the inside of the wall structure looked like. Now see how it is coming along with drywall! The drywall installation throughout the building is complete.

The painting and work on the exterior is coming along fine. In the coming week the base course for the new parking lot will begin installation.

If you look at the drywall you can see that some of the walls are being painted. Also see the drop down ceiling framework is installed and all of the site lighting is completed.

The exterior wall and window quality was tested on October 4th. Imagine what the view will be like with those floor to ceiling windows!

The library's front door! Does it feel welcoming yet?

A little pop of color on the walls makes it feel a little more like home. There will be a lot of extra private space for studying and group meetings! We hope you are getting as excited as we are! There is a large difference between www.irs.com and www.irs.gov. One is the legitimate Internal Revenue Serivces website, and the other is a imitation. Who is responsible for the website? The American Library Association has some recommendations:

Many URLs (Uniform Resource Locator or web site address) include the name and type of organization sponsoring the webpage. The 3-letter domain codes and 2-letter country codes provide hints on the type of organization. Common domain codes are:

Technology Tip #10: Use Your Kindle to Check out E-Books

For the last several years Nooks and other e-readers have had the ability to borrow e-books from public libraries. This borrowing has grown in popularity as the price of books go up and the price of e-readers go down. Kindle owners have been excluded from these library services because Amazon did not allow the use or "sharing" of e-books. Today brings exciting news for Kindle owners, starting today you can borrow e-books from public libraries!

Here is a brief explanation of how to borrow e-books for your Kindle from the Mukwonago Community Library. If you don't have a Kindle and you still want to see how this process works please remember the library has a Kindle available for checkout. Or if you just need more detailed instructions come see us at the reference desk.

Step 1: Go to the library website: http://www.blogger.com/www.mukcom.lib.wi.us

Step 2: Click on the Subscription Database box, and then scroll down to "Overdrive". Click once on Overdrive.

Step 3: Log in to Overdrive with your library card number.

Step 4: There is currently a shortcut on the left hand side of the Overdrive catalog that says "Now Available" and has a picture of the Kindle. Left click there once.

Step 5: Now you have a list of all available titles, add the titles to your cart that you are interested in.

Step 6: When you are ready to check out the "Get for Kindle" button will take you to the Amazon website.

Step 7: Once at the Amazon website you will have to download the appropriate software to your computer.

Step 8: Then the book should appear on your Kindle.

If you want a chance to take a sneak peak at the new Mukwonago Community Library on 511 Division Street before it opens, you should come to our Foundation Signing Event.
The new library building is looking great and closing in on completion. It wouldn’t have been possible without terrific support from our community, so stop in to the library construction site on Saturday, Oct. 8 between 10 a.m. and noon and sign the library’s foundation. We want to get as many signatures as we can before we cover the cement foundation with flooring and carpeting. This is a chance for everyone in our community to “leave their mark” on the new library and see it before it officially opens!

Technology Tip #9: Mint.com

Mint.com is a free website and cell phone app that allows you to keep track of your finances in one place. I have been using it for over 6 months now and find it awesome and with over 6 million users it will be around for awhile. It offers a ton of nifty features like bill reminders to your phone, investment tracking, notification of overdraft, helpful graphs, spending tracking, and more. I have starting using it to track my retirement investments and my little nest egg.

With any website that helps you track financial information be prepared to share your personal information. So if you are still a little new, or do not feel completely comfortable with how good your security and identify theft protection is I would not utilize this website yet. (But they do have exceptional security for a free service.) I highly suggest this if you are a parent trying to teach a young 20 something how to better deal with their finances, it links in the fun of technology with the education of better fiscal responsibility. If you order a magazine or have a cable provider, more and more often vendors are offering complimentary online subscriptions. This may not seem like a big deal until you consider the possibility of legally sharing access to those shows with friends and family.

My parents have a cable subscription with the "works" including HBO. Dish Network as a extra service provides them with the ability to access a website that has all of the latest shows, movies, and other viewing material available with their subscription. Since they don't use the online version they provided me access to their online subscription, and voila I can watch HBO on my computer.

I subscribe to a cooking magazine that my friend who lives across the state always wants to borrow when she comes to my house. The other day I realized I could give her access to my free online subscription and I would be able to keep my magazines for a change!

If you consider offering or sharing these online subscriptions with friends or family, imagine the amount of money it could save for people to pool resources. It also does not have legal issues and implications that resource piracy has. So double check your magazine, cable and other media subscriptions to see if you have online access.

How to Choose a Movie

Step 1: Pick the title of a movie you feel like watching in your head. For example my favorite movie of all time is Frida (the cinematography is gorgeous and I am sucker for biography type stuff). Or pick a favorite actor or director. (Director is my favorite way to search!)

Step 2: Go to http://www.imdb.com/, that is the Internet Movie Database. (Don't worry your going to love it!).

Step 3: Once you are at IMDB type the name of your movie into the search bar and click the "Go" button.

Step 4: IMDB will have a list of movies, actors, directors, or other items you are looking for. Click on the correct one.

Step 5: Every imaginable detail about this movie will be presented to you, including cast, trailers, quotes and more. If you scroll to the bottom of that page it will list recommendations. For example they recommend if you like Frida, you will enjoy:

Step 6: Go to the Mukwonago Community Library catalog and start requesting your movies.

If you are a college student or help a college student out...you know the agony of shelling out hundreds of dollars for books this semester. Just like any product you can use websites to find lower it. Just be wary for shipping costs and figure that into your final total. Cheapism.com offered three websites as their top choices and after trying them I have to agree!

Here are Cheapism’s top picks for college textbooks sites.

Textbook rental site Chegg.com offers 2.4 million titles and gives students the option to send books back for free or buy them at the end of the term. Students can also buy and sell books. The site holds renters accountable for the books’ condition upon return, so it may not be the best choice for copious highlighters, but it earns positive reviews for providing books that look like new. Textbooks.com boasts a selection of 7 million books to buy or rent and offers free shipping on orders of $25 or more. User reviews often cite Textbooks.com as the cheapest option, and the site itself promises up to 90 percent off. Customers also applaud a redesign that makes it easy to find the best deal. We are fully roofed! While the windows aren't in yet, having a roof on the entire structure will allow the inside work crews to get even busier than they have been. A major milestone reached! Here are the most recent pictures, including some great shots of the tower "cap" being put in place:

Technology Tip #6: How to Get the Software You Need At Home For Free

A lot of people come to the library to access the software we have on the computers. They need Microsoft Word to update their resume, Microsoft Publisher to make a poster for an event, Microsoft Excel to make a budget, etc. This software can be expensive depending on where and when you buy it. Microsoft Office Student Edition can range anywhere from $88 to $290.

If you aren't in a position to afford that type of software, don't worry there are alternate options for you to consider, for free. This type of free software is known as "open source" software. The concept behind it is that instead of one company being behind the creation, a team of volunteers help create it. When open source software first came on the scene in the late 90s it wasn't very popular because the software wasn't as "slick" as the kind you could pay for. Slowly but surely open software has grown in popularity and in product stability.

There is an open source software version for almost any software you can conceive of. Be well aware before you start downloading things willy-nilly. Unless you can find a reputable source the recommends the software, do not download it! Here are a few trust worthy open source software that I recommend: (click on the link to get to the page you can download these programs from).

If you need Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, download Open Office.

If you need Adobe Photoshop download Gimp.

If you want Windows download Ubuntu (it has Open Office & Gimp included)

If you need something to help you with formatting your e books to share try Calibre.

If you don't have the internet on your home computer but still want these computer have no fear! Spend a few bucks and get yourself a memory stick. When you come to the library we can help you download the software to the memory stick. Then you can move the software from your memory stick to your home computer.

I heard some cool news from our Library Automation Coordinator today. "With 2011 LSTA funds a service called LibraryAnywhere was purchased to give libraries a mobile website as well as apps for the public to access information about the libraries as well as search the catalog, place holds and renew materials." Which means coming next month if you download the "Library Anywhere" application to your phone, you will have access to some information and services through the Mukwonago Community Library!

That means the next time you are in a long line at the supermarket...instead of buying that magazine in line...put it on hold from your cell phone.

We've got bricks! Always a good sign on a building that features brick from top to bottom. It's not all installed yet-- that'll take a little while-- but we're on our way. Plus, the building is very nearly completely enclosed and the workers have started to install shingles. Soon weather won't be much of a factor for the remainder of the project-- yay! Here are the latest pics:

Technology Tip #5: Master Popular Software with Learning Express

I have mentioned Learning Express multiple times in blog posts. I do this because it is a great learning tool, especially for beginners. These free video tutorials can help you learn the popular software listed below.

I cannot stress how important knowing some of this software is for the workplace. If you are nervous about jumping in head first, try Microsoft Word. It is a easier word processing software that you can find on most computers. Just go to our Subscription Database Page, click on Learning Express, and then select "Popular Software Tutorials" in the right hand side. Worth a Look: LibraryThing

In case you haven’t heard of the website LibraryThing, let me introduce you to a fantastic resource for all of us book lovers. LibraryThing is essentially a place to catalog all your books online, discuss them if you’d like, and share reading suggestions. If you are like me, you have 100’s of beloved books scattered across your home, not even sure what books you have anymore. LibraryThing brings some semblance of order to them. Simply enter each book using it’s ISBN number, title, or author, and LibraryThing will automatically search the catalogs of nearly a 1000 libraries and bookstores around the world (including the Library of Congress and Amazon) to fill in every piece of information you could possibly want to know about that book—title, authors, subjects, first lines, series’, reviews, cover images, you name it. It will even assign Dewey Decimal System numbers to your books if you want to get all librarian on them.

There are more features than we can possible mention here, but another great use for LibraryThing is to gather ideas for your next read. Once you have a few books catalogued, LibraryThing uses recommendations from its 1.3 million users to give you reading suggestions based on the books in your library.

To that end, the Mukwonago Community Library has started its own LibraryThing “Catalog of Recommendations” (you can also find it by searching LibraryThing for “Mukwonago library”). In this catalog you will find a completely random assortment of books--for adults, teens, and children--that we, for whatever reason, really like and think you might too. So check it out, browse around, and follow some links. There’s no telling what great book you might find.

Inside Look at the MAM's exhibit: The Emperor's Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City

Join us at at the Mukwonago Community Library on Thursday, August 25th at 6:30 pm, as Judy White docent from the Milwaukee Art Museum gives an hour long audio/visual presentation about the Museum's featured exhibition. "The Emperor's Private Paradise: Treasures of the Forbidden City".

Gain insights into the breathtaking treasures commissioned by the 18th Century Qianlong Emperor to adorn his private residence deep in China's Forbidden City. The stunning collection ranges from elaborate to the quietly personal--reflecting the refined vision of history's most influential rulers, revealing his reverence for nature and his dedication to Buddhism, Confucian morals, and scholarly pursuits.

I got the opportunity to visit this collection and even by today's standards you can see the quality and exquisiteness of each piece. It was the first time I had ever seen a true lacquered piece of Chinese artwork with inlaid gold so closely. Seeing the best type of this art from the country in which lacquering originated was just astounding. Hopefully you get the chance to see this display before it ends on September 11th, 2011. The building is really taking shape! With the trusses up, you can see how the roof lines will look and soon the sheeting will be down and the crews can work on getting shingles in place. Here are some recent views of the progress:

Technology Tip #4: Ctrl, Alt, Del

Most computer users are familiar with the "Open Task Manager" feature. For those of us who aren't...it is worth mentioning.

If you ever find yourself in a situation when the computer is running veeerrrrryyyy slowly or continually freezing, the "Open Task Manager" feature may help you fix it. The common problem with slow or continually freezing computers is the computer is just trying to do to much at once. Depending on your computer's speed, used memory, or age it can only do so much at one time.

The "Open Task Manager" feature will help you list everything that the computer is doing. From that list you can see what is is having troubles with. Next to the list it will either report the program as "Responding" or "Not Responding". You will want to go through and close any programs that are Not Responding. Now let's show you how to do it!

Step 1: Press the "Ctrl", "Alt" and "Delete" button all at the same time. Hold it long enough for the screen to change or a box to pop up.

Step 2: Depending on what operating system your computer has, what screen that comes up, or what box that pops up will be different. This is the most common box that will appear. Notice that it lists everything that the computer is running on the left hand side "tasks" and the status of those tasks on the right.

Step 3: You will want to left click once on the task that is "Not Responding". Then left click the "end task" button. Repeat this step until you have closed all of the "Not Responding" tasks.

Step 4: When you are all done to close the "Task Manager" click on the "x" in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

Give it a try!

We have walls! Or at least the beginnings of walls. Soon we'll have a roof, as well. Things are really taking shape over at the construction site and so far we are still on pace to have a grand opening on Midnight Magic weekend. Here are the latest shots:

Here's a shot of the southeast corner. You can see the "outline" of the walls and the peaked "hip" roof is starting to take shape as the crews get the trusses set.

To print from most Microsoft Programs and web browsers,

Hold down the Ctrl button and hit the "P" key.

Try it now!

A box with your printing options will pop up on your screen. The options you have for printing will be different depending on the program or web browser you are using. But most will give you the option of changing from color to black and white printing, the number of pages to print, and more.

Friends of Mukwonago Community Library Secure $30,000+ Grant

We received awesome news today from the President for the Friends of the Mukwonago Community Library, Romaine Kleinfeldt. The Friends had submitted a grant application to the Potawatomi Bingo and Casino's, Miracle on Canal Street Program. The Friends were selected in the final drawing!!!

The drawing guarantees a grant between $30,000 to $50,000. These funds must be used towards children's programs and materials. We congratulate the Friends on their success and thank for their hard work and diligence in supporting the Mukwonago Community Library. It will be exciting to see what new and diverse programs this grant money will allow. If you run into Romaine while you are at the library, please congratulate her! Thank you to anyone that also supports the Miracle on Canal Street program.

Appalachian Storyteller, Sari (Ma) Semple Visits Aug. 10

In the mood for a good old fashioned story told by someone who knows how to spin a yarn? Stop by the Mukwonago Community Library on Wednesday August 10 from 6:30pm-8pm and be enthralled with the master story-telling of Jessica Michna who dons full traditional garb to portray Sari (Ma) Semple, a folksy story-teller from 19^th century Appalchia. Sari takes us back to the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of the mid-nineteenth century. As Sari spins her tales the listener is transported to those hills. The stories blend together the folklore and the gritty reality of life in the ridges and hollers of Appalachia. Young and old alike will be spellbound by the rich tapestry of words woven by Sari. She may not be the First Lady of the Land but she certainly is the first lady of Appalachia.

Mukwonago River

I do not live in Mukwonago, but I work here three days a week at the library. Since I have been working here I have gotten to enjoy all sorts of festivities that I thought were only part of big city life. The Farmer's Market, Flea Markets, and Midnight Magic. I got super excited when I heard about "Mukwonago's Music In the Park" hosted by the Mukwonago Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. Friday evenings from 6pm-9pm at Indianhead Park-Beach there is free admission to see a live band with lots of vendors to choose from.

I got to thinking about the Mukwonago River and how packed the beach is most days when I drive past. While doing a little research I found an article in a Milwaukee neighborhood newspaper that talks about the ecological diversity of the Mukwonago River. It is revered for it's lack of pollutants, pristine condition, and overall impressive healthy inhabitants. Did you know the river has one of the most diverse mussel populations in south-eastern Wisconsin? It was also awesome to know that someone has been doing an annual sampling of the fish in the river and last year they found 35 different species of fish. To make things even cooler, here I was just looking at Indianhead Park-Beach, and this article talks about the over 2,700 acres that have been conserved to ensure the area stays protected.

Read the article for yourself! I got a kick out of it, because the newspaper The Bayview Compass is from the neighborhood I live in. It is nice to know that more people outside of Mukwonago are appreciating the natural and social wonder the community has to offer.

Technology Tip #2: Organize and Store Your Photos

Digital photography is great! You can take hundreds of photos on one memory card and store them easily on your computer. A common issue I run into with some people is they misunderstand the longevity of digital photographs. They believe that these photographs will be safely stored forever on their computer. The truth is print photographs have a longer life span than digital photographs and that has to do with a technology term called "digital migration".

Digital migration is moving your digital photographs from one electronic device to another. For example you create digital photograph with your phone/scanner/camera and then usually transfer it to a computer. The digital migration is not over for that photograph yet, because you will probably have to move it to several other computers in your lifetime. Consumer Reports suggests replacing your computer every 4 to 6 years. If you move your images on to each new computer, suddenly by the time your new baby gets old enough to graduate high school you have "migrated" 3 or 4 times. Every time you complete that process the chances of those images getting lost or damaged is increased. To avoid those problems I suggest saving them to a online web album.

You can utilize a online web album for easier access and saving of your photos. There are a ton of free services and I am a big fan of Picasa. I think this Google provided program is awesome because is easy to download, will search your computer for all of your photographs, comes with a simple free photo editing software, and gives a lot of control over if anyone can view your photos on the internet. You can also clearly label each photo, change the size of the photo, and correct some of the errors like "red eye". If you find Picasa not to your liking there are other free services like Photobucket and Flickr.

Once you download Picasa and start uploading your photographs you save your computers in a "online web album". That way if your computer ever blows up, melts, freezes, or gets stolen, your photos will be saved and accessible through any other computer with internet access. You can also save your photos in different albums. Here is an example of what a album with one photo would look like (that is my nephew..isn't he cute).

If you are interested in getting started with Picasa I suggest checking out some of the intro material. If you are still a little confused stop in at the library and the staff can assist you in understanding. Good luck with your photos!

Local author Pischke to discuss "The Women of Block 12"

Mrs Pischke is the author of the book, The Women of Block 12: Voices From a Jail Ministry. A resident of Mukwonago, Mrs. Pischke will discuss her experiences working with the Dismas Jail Ministry, an outreach organization serving inmates and those affected by crime. In her book, The Women of Block 12, Mrs. Pischke not only tells of her time working with incarcerated women awaiting trial, but she lets the women tell their own stories. The stories they tell of broken childhoods, heartbreak, and shattered dreams are also stories of growth, courage, the resilience of the human spirit, and the power of faith. Technology Tip of the Week Part 1

So I have been mulling over some ideas for a weekly blog segment. There have been some neat blog posts in the past including, BBB (Big, Beautiful, Books) and the Construction Updates on the expansion are awesome! But I wanted something where people could come and learn a little tidbit of information. Since a lot of patrons come to the library to use technology and learn about it, I thought our virtual presence should offer the same services. So welcome to the new weekly blog addition, Technology Tips!

Tips for Week #1: SHORTCUT KEYS

Using the mouse for some people can be difficult, and take a lot of time. A way to make that easier (especially for seniors) is to utilize shortcut keys. Shortcut keys are certain buttons or combination of buttons (pressed at the same time) on the keyboard that will make actions happen. It is often nice because instead of clicking three things to get to that command, you can press these button combinations to make it easier. There are oodles of them, these are just some of the simpler ones I use on a daily basis. Try the web browsing tips NOW! :)

Writers' Group Meetings

Most of our patrons come to the library because they enjoy reading. There are a select few who come here on the last Wednesday of every month because they enjoy writing. Writing is a great way to exercise your creativity, release stress, and share with others. So capture your thoughts, ideas, and emotions on paper and then let a friendly group of fellow writers help you craft it. Everyone takes turn reading their piece for 5 minutes, and then receives feedback from the rest of the group. Come and join the Wonago Word Weavers Wednesday of every month, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Please note that some meeting times may change.

July 27th, August 31st, September 28th, October 26th, November 30th, and December 28th.

If you are a novice writer and want some materials to help you get started, the reference desk at the Mukwonago Community Library is a good place to stop at. Construction Photos: Ten

What a difference a bunch of dirt makes! If you haven't driven by the construction site recently, I urge you to do so-- it's really looking good. All of the big holes have been filled in, the basement is fully enclosed and the structural steel support structure is mostly in place. You can really get a sense of the size of the place now-- and it is big! Here are some shots from today:

Easy Meals for the Entire Week

I can be honest when I say I have not been using my youth to develop my cooking skills. I pass through life on deli sandwiches and spaghetti. Through a little luck and the lazy days of summer I found a little spare time to start cooking. For months I have been complaining..."Why can't I find a easy and affordable shopping list that is coupled with recipes for meals for the entire week...grumble...grumble?".

I found one!

The magazine Everyday with Rachel Ray has a leaflet that has a shopping list and the recipes! I went shopping last night and for $77.00 I got 7 interesting, inspiring, and delicious meals. I also have to be honest that I ended up purchasing some items I have never used or eaten in my life. My step-dad is a chef so that is a pretty embarrassing revelation. I found out that kale is a green lettuce type item, and that bow-tie noodles have an entirely different name on the box.

My first recipe was a smash! I made a homemade pizza with hot sausage, rosemary flavored red pepper and onion, ricotta cheese, and Parmesan sprinklings! For the first time in a long time my leftovers weren't boring!

Now if you have a fancy cell phone like a Android or a Smart Phone they also have apps where you can photograph a section of the magazine and it will download the recipes and shopping list to your cell phone. How cool!

Now enough about Rachel Ray, have you ever tried Cooks Illustrated? This is one of the most trusted and traditional cooking magazines that cooks have trusted for years. My aunt swears by a pie crust recipe with vodka....and it really is awesome.

A long story short, we have a lot of great items at the library that can help make your life a little more exciting....even in the small tasty ways.

Energy Presentation

Local energy expert Arley Uhrig came and gave a presentation on Global Warming/Climate Change last month. Come see part II of his series where he will help you understand how you can conserve energy in your home around you. Besides talking about energy conservation and efficiency he is extremely knowledgeable about how it works.

Come and listen to his presentation and bring your energy questions. There is also a little display of books and resources in the library if you need something to get your noodle going!

Construction Photos: Nine

Things are really moving at the construction site now that the weather has started to cooperate a little bit. We're back on schedule! So keep your fingers crossed that things keep moving smoothly and we can be moved back into our wonderful new home by the end of the year. Here are some shots of the progress:

Here we see an excavator clearing away the soil around the foundation of the existing building so that the waterproofing on the new and old portions can be integrated.

The purple stuff helps keep the waterproofing in place and also provides some insulation. Soon these canyons will be filled up with all the dirt piled around the perimeter of the site.

Okay, it's been a little while since we posted one of these and some significant progress has been made in the interim. Check out what's been happening at the construction site:

Here we can see that the basement is now fully enclosed-- walls and ceiling. Yay! Plus, you can see a little of the structural steel that will hold up ceiling trusses once they are installed in July.

This shot shows the basement relative to the existing building. The piles of dirt will be used to fill in around the basement walls after the 4th of July.

Just a quick reminder that the library will be closed on the Fourth of July in honor of Independence Day.

Though we won't be open that day, doesn't mean we can't help you celebrate!
We have music to play at your BBQ, some suggested CDs you may find are Now that's What I Call the USA: The Patriotic Country Collection, God Bless America, America: A Tribute to Heroes, and more! We also have some great cooking magazines that could help you whip up the prize winning dish at your get together, may I suggest reading Midwest Living they had some sweet corn recipes with pictures that are making my mouth water. We also have lots of other great material.

If you miss the fireworks, don't fret, relive the experience through this free little online game...it takes a few minutes to load, but it is fun and pretty!

1. All entries must be turned in between Friday, July 8th at 9 am and Wednesday, July 13th at 10 am. (We do not accept earlier drop offs because of the chances of entries spoiling).
2. Entries do not have to look like a book. They just have to be a food creation that is based off of a book title, cover or character.
3. Items that need to be refrigerated should be no larger than 1’ by 1’.
4. Items that do not need to be refrigerated may be any size.
5. To be eligible to win the contestant must turn in the entry with a completely filled out entry form.
6. Participation in this contest is giving your permission to publish images of the entry and contestant’s name for library promotion. You also understand that your entry will be eaten. 
7. Grand prize winner receives:

• 10 free entries for SLP grand prizes
• A SLP cooking apron
• 5 free books from the SLP collection

All contestants will received:

• 1 free entry for the SLP grand prize
• 1 free book from SLP collection (up to first 10 contestants)

Local Author Visits...and a Mystery!

Author Jerry Peterson and Maddy Hunter recently visited us to tell us all about their great books!

Jerry's book Early's Fall takes place in the 1940s is Riley County Kansas. Sheriff James Early's job becomes personal when some locals turn up butchered. The Sheriff does his share of sleuthing with his great sidekicks while trying to solve the mystery. Great dialog and intelligently written. If you want a taste of Jerry's writing you can read the first three chapters of his book on his website, or check the book out from the library.

Maddy Hunter writes a series called Passport to Peril. This hilarious series follows a troupe of senior citizens while they vacation all over the world. While on these vacations they become the center of wild murders, crimes, and other antics. Laugh along with these cozy mysteries and get your copy from the library, or check them out at her website.

These truck mounted cranes are pretty terrific. Though they are small (as far as some cranes go) they can still hoist as much as 14 tons. Incredible!

Gang planks weigh between 10 & 15 pounds per square foot. These premolded pieces will help create the structure of the basement concrete walls.

These gang planks are held into place by the forms. There has also been in ground plumbing finished on the completed basement area of the library...OoOoO.

This is a shot of the current dividing door between the completed section of basement and the addition basement. A good place to store valuables or relocate the Director's Office :P

Pathfinder: Learning About Dogs

Doggonit! If your reading this, then I can assume you want to know a little bit more about our canine pals. You may be looking at options for training, optimal diet and exercise, what breed is best for you, or just reading up. Whatever your need the library has a surprising amount of material, suggestions, and experiences to help you become more familiar with Man's Best Friends. Let's have a look!

Events:
We have Paws to Read, which is a reading activity geared for our younger readers. Visit the library and read a poem, picture book, or book chapter to our Therapy Dogs. This is a drop in event with no registration necessary. The intent of this program is to help youth connect with reading, it is also an opportunity for them to connect with dogs. We have Navarre the Samoyed, Zeus the American Bulldog mix, B.J. the Rottweiller, and a new welcome to Marcie the Border Collie. If you don't feel like reading you can always come visit these friendly dogs, or give your younger family members a memorable experience with dogs first hand! Dog Exercise Areas
Dog are welcome in any Waukesha County park, given they are properly licenced and leashed. If you want to let your dog off leash and exercise them Waukesha County has two areas. It is a nice perk because there is no extra charge for using these areas (Milwaukee County charges). For more information check out the Waukesha County Park System website.

Speciality Business

Be BIG Contest

Clifford the Big Red Dog promotes through Scholastic the Be BIG Contest. It is a national compaign that invites everyone, big and small, to take action and raise awareness for how CLIFFORD'S BIG IDEAS can make the world a better place. The mission of the BE BIG is to recognize and reward others for their BE BIG actions, to catalyze change in local communities and to provide resources for everyone to share Big Ideas!

Anyone can enter by June 17, 2011 and the grand prize winner will receive a $25,000 community grant to put towards their BIG IDEA. First prize honorees will get a $2,500 community grant, and second prize honorees will get $1,315.79. So what can you change?

My BIG IDEA was special funding for local children who are in foster care, hospitalization, or other circumstance. I want them to be able to have a selection of books available that they can keep. I believe that reading is a way for people to escape problems and to help identify themselves. So what is your BIG IDEA?

Did you ever notice that watching or reading something that is popular gives you something to talk about with people? I hear on a constant basis..."Did you catch the latest American Idol performance"...or "Have you read this Stephen King book?".

I love having something to be able to talk about with people. I also like to start a conversation, which is why I am a documentary junkie. I'll be honest when I say I get a lot of my movies from Netflix because my home television is my computer. But working at the library gives me a lot of great ideas on what documentaries to watch or even checkout.

Time Out New York really did an excellent job pulling together some controversial and educational material. Check out their top 50 documentaries of all time here.

The outline of the new library is taking shape! I just hope these guys are as good at putting things together as they have been at taking things apart.

Here you can see the concrete footings for the expansion area. Not that exciting looking, but pretty important in terms of making the floor slab work right.

Ooooo... our new electrical transformer. So shiny, so... green!

And here's the new electrical service panel that the transformer feeds. More power!

Some of the... well, I don't know the technical term, but the metal forms they use to set the concrete mold shapes for the wall foundations.

Those metal forms from the previous picture are in use in this picture, showing how the concrete will look for the bay window, once it is poured.

Final shot-- the whole east side excavated. The new basement will run under this entire stretch of building.

It's raining, it's pouring.....but there is no old man snoring. Keep your family protected by listening to weather warnings and following these few safety tips:

1. Listen for warnings and alarms!
If the weather looks questionable turn on a local radio station and listen for warnings. You can also sign up for e-mail warnings and Facebook updates for emergencies at the Emergency and E-mail and Wireless Network. (Click the link to sign up for alerts for Waukesha County.)

2. For severe weather and emergencies seek shelter!
Anytime there is severe weather or emergencies there are shelter and services available to those in need in Waukesha County. Those seeking shelter should dial 2-1-1. This service will provide local information on available lodging. Your call to 2-1-1 is free and confidential, and is available throughout Wisconsin. 2-1-1 service is available 24 hours 7 days per week. If your cellular provider does not allow calls to 2-1-1, please call (877) 947-2211 or (262) 547-3388.

3. Have a plan!
It has been said that the Japanese suffered less fatalities during the earthquake disasters because they were prepared. Take their example and talk to your family. If phones are down how will you find each other? Locate a shelter or safe place near your home as a designated meeting area. Or just talk to them about what to do in case of an emergency.

National Salvation Army Week

These bell ringers help thousands of people across the nation celebrate their holidays better by organizing and collectiong donations. To help celebrate this organization the National Salvation Army Week falls from May 8th through the 15th. When the United States entered World War I the Salvation Army was ready to help. The Salvation Army established a War Board and began programs in US Army camps and canteens across the country.

Come over to the library to read up on World War I and the history of the Salvation Army. We also have a great collection of educational World War I DVDs. Otherwise donate or volunteer at your local Salvation Army.

Wow! They are really going to town over at the expansion site. Here's some new shots from Tuesday, May 3. First the inside:

In the following photos you can see the foundations being prepared for the pouring of the concrete:

It's quite cool to be able to see where the new walls are actually going to go-- including that gorgeous West side bow window. The second of the two photos shows the inspection of the foundation layout. The front loader moving topsoil in the background was busy taking dirt from the east side and dumping it on the west side in preparation for the pouring of the foundations and the grading of the new parking area.

I don't know about you...but I have been reading about Wisconsin in the news everywhere the last few months. Every national or trade magazine is talking about politics....well let's try something lighter on for size this evening!

I came across this older OnMilwaukee.com article about movies filmed in Wisconsin. Did you know that a section of the Blues Brothers movie was filmed on 794? Check out this brief article to get some ideas about your next flick...then you can point and say "hey that's us!"

Some pictures of the ongoing demolition from the previous two weeks. The exterior brick on the north and east walls has been removed, since the new building will be expanding in those directions:

Plus, the

planter is gone, making way for the drive-up book drop. All of the named bricks have been preserved, never fear.

The inside has not escaped unscathed. Most of the office space is gone, and the carpeting and ceilings have likewise disappeared.
